Super Smash! Spotted Lanternfly Presentation
December 13, 2025 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Please note, this event is for registered for Nature Initiative members only. To learn more about our youth program, click here.
The spotted lanternfly (SLF) is an invasive, plant-hopping insect that was first detected in New York in 2020. This recent pest species is one we’ve become quite familiar with at Avalon, especially during our gardening projects. We have an exciting opportunity to welcome some university students who are climate science majors at SBU’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) . They will be doing a short presentation followed by an origami style craft to highlight the effects of invasive species and how scientists can make informed management decisions in the future. This will also serve as a way to connect with community members and they are open to taking any questions about environmental majors/courses if you are thinking about pursuing a related field in the future! Join us for a morning of conversation and crafts!
This will be taking place indoors at the Avalon Barn located on Shep Jones Lane.

WHAT TO BRING/FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS:
- Any questions you may have about invasive species or what it’s like to be a college student at SBU!
