Oyster Jamboree!

The Suffolk County 250th Anniversary Committee is proud to partner with the Village of Port Jefferson to bring an exciting new signature event to Harborfront Park this summer. The Oyster Jamboree celebrates our region’s historic oyster industry, honors our oyster growers, and brings together residents, visitors, and the business community while showcasing Port Jefferson’s maritime heritage. The festival will feature locally harvested oysters from Long Island oyster growers, waterfront activities and marine education, and colonial era reenactments and demonstrations.
Nature Initiative is joining in the effort of collecting and recycling oyster shells used throughout the day. We need all hands on deck!! Since it is a full day, volunteers are welcome to sign up for a shift of when they’ll be available to participate. Once the oyster shells are properly cured, they are placed back into our local bays and harbors to form a reef structure for live oysters to grow on.
We are looking forward to a fun day and contributing to recycling oyster shells for a great cause! Water, snacks and oyster jamboree t-shirts will be provided for volunteers.
WHAT TO BRING/FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS:
- Clothing: closed toed shoes/sneakers comfortable for walking around
- Hat/sunscreen/bugspray
- Water bottle & snack or bagged lunch
