EVENT FULL

Dive in to a 4-day session focused on exploring marine life beneath the water’s surface, learning more about our local estuaries, participating in field activities and getting on the water! If you love the ocean as much as I do, want to learn more about marine life, or are considering exploring a career as a Marine Biologist or a related field then this is a great opportunity!

This program is first come, first serve! Please make sure you can commit to at least two out of the four dates and times before signing up. Meeting locations will vary between West Meadow Beach, Nissequogue River, Stony Brook Harbor and the LI Aquarium.

Once turtles start hatching, the Friends of Flax Pond will be working to release them into the marsh on the creek side of the walking path at West Meadow Beach. We need volunteers to help photograph, weigh, measure, and notch the shells of the hatchlings. If there are no signs of hatchlings yet, we will continue to monitor the area for predated nests and dig up the protected nests to check on the eggs. We will be meeting at the start of the walking path at the end of Trustees Road.

What to bring/further instructions:

  • Clothing: closed toed shoes/sneakers, long pants- ticks and poison ivy are prevalent
  • Water bottle
  • Hat/sunglasses/sunscreen
