Sea Turtles of NY Presentation

November 10, 2023 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Please note, this event is for registered for Nature Initiative members only. To learn more about our youth program, click here.

Did you know that out of 7 sea turtle species in the world, 4 species swim in the waters off Long Island each year? This is the time of year when these amazing marine animals begin their migration south to warmer waters for nesting- mothers have an innate ability to return back to the beach where they were born to lay their eggs. Unfortunately as the effects of climate change are more pronounced, some turtles begin to migrate too late and become hypothermic or cold-stunned. Join us for an interactive in-person presentation by the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) to learn more about these spectacular reptiles and what we can do to help conserve them. We’ll be meeting at the barn located on Shep Jones Lane in Stony Brook.

It is highly recommended to attend this presentation if you plan on participating in cold stun sea turtle walks this season. This will be a detailed introduction to basic anatomy, eating habits, behavior, nesting and conservation.
