“Be a Good Egg”

August 5, 2023 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Please note, this event is for registered for Nature Initiative members only. To learn more about our youth program, click here.

The “Be a Good Egg” program, is an outreach initiative implemented by Audubon staff, chapters, partners, and volunteers. Be a Good Egg aims to reduce human disturbance threats to beach-nesting birds, on Long Island. Through education, outreach, and social marketing we encourage beach-goers to pledge to share the shore with Piping Plovers and other beach-nesting bird species.
During our on-the-beach outreach days, we set up a tent and table at the entrance to busy Long Island beaches and talk to as many beach-goers as possible about beach-nesting birds. We provide visitors with pamphlets and brochures about beach-nesting bird biology, our conservation work, and information on how to reduce disturbances to birds. Volunteers and staff talk with people about sharing the beach with shorebirds and about how their actions on the beach can benefit birds. We then ask beach visitors to sign a pledge committing to the following three things:
1. Respect fenced-off nesting areas (to prevent eggs from being stepped on and decrease disturbance to adults and chicks)
2. Properly dispose of trash (because trash attracts predators to nesting areas and can pose a threat to birds)
3. Don’t bring dogs to nesting beaches (since dogs can crush eggs or kill chicks and even well-behaved dogs can scare adults).
Come join us to volunteer at this tabling event! Audubon New York staff will be at each event to guide you and answer any questions. We’ll be meeting at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park.
**Volunteers are welcome to sign up for a half day or full day since this is a longer event. If you are doing a half day, please email me with the time frame (9:00 AM-10:30 AM or 10:30 AM-12:00 PM) you would like to attend for after signing up.**
