Terrapin Monitoring

August 30 @ 9:30 am - 11:00 am

EVENT FULL

Turtles are hatching at West Meadow! Join us as we work on uncovering the nests we protected to monitor for any hatching activity. If there is no hatching taking place, we will simply cover the nest back up and check again over the next couple of weeks. However if we do see hatching, we’ll be assisting in the data collection process for the babies. The eggs take about 60 days to hatch after they are laid, so we’ll be checking the earliest nests first. We never know what we’ll see!

There will be plenty of sessions to check for nesting terrapins, we never know exactly when they will decide to come out! We will be meeting at West Meadow Beach located on Trustees Road in Stony Brook.

WHAT TO BRING/FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Clothing: long pants, high socks, sneakers/closed toed shoes- there will be ticks and poison ivy off the path!
  • Sunscreen/sunglasses
  • Hat/bugspray
