Terrapin Monitoring

June 28, 2022 @ 8:30 am - 10:30 am

Please note, this event is for registered for Nature Initiative members only. To learn more about our youth program, click here.

The Diamondback Terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin) is a species of brackish water turtle that have established an active nesting population at West Meadow Beach. We are joining the Friends of Flax Pond to check sites along the walking path in search of nesting female terrapin turtles. They usually begin to nest in June- once the sun comes out so should the turtles! If we do see these turtles laying their eggs on the beach, we will be prepared to take the GPS coordinates of where the nests are located, count the number of eggs and protect the nest from predators such as fox and raccoons. We will also tag and take measurements of the turtles before setting them back out. We need your help to monitor the beach and search for terrapins so we can protect their nests!

There will be plenty of sessions to check for nesting terrapins, we never know exactly when they will decide to come out! We will be meeting at West Meadow Beach located on Trustees Road in Stony Brook.

WHAT TO BRING/FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Clothing: long pants, high socks, long sleeves, sneakers/closed toed shoes- there will be ticks and poison ivy off the path!
  • Sunscreen/sunglasses
  • Hat/bugspray
  • Water bottle
