Solar Sunday

November 6, 2022 @ 12:30 pm - 3:00 pm

Please note, this event is for registered for Nature Initiative members only. To learn more about our youth program, click here.

Our astronomers who run the observatory and planetarium programs at Avalon came up with a new, innovative program called Solar Sundays. On two Sundays a month, they will open the barn gates to the public where park visitors may come to the observatory area to learn more about different aspects of the sun. David B and David C will use the telescope to show sunspots in various elements of light.

We are calling on our students who have an interest in astronomy or who would like to learn more to serve as helpers for this unique program. You can show visitors where the observatory is, tell them more about the Solar Sunday program, and help the David’s run the show! This is a fun opportunity to do some outreach with the public while earning community service hours.

You are not required to speak to the public; if you would rather observe and learn until you feel comfortable that is not an issue. We also need guides to point visitors where to go. It is a flexible program geared towards showcasing the sun in a fun way so there is no pressure!

We will be meeting at the Avalon Barn located on Shep Jones Lane in Stony Brook.
