Seal Walk at Cupsogue Beach

January 29, 2022 @ 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm

Please note, this event is for registered for Nature Initiative members only. To learn more about our youth program, click here.

RESCHEDULED- DUE TO NOR’EASTER

Field biologists from the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) have been studying seals, marine mammals and sea turtles at this location for decades. In the last three years, it has been noted that seals are now considered to be year round visitors in our waters.  Come join us to learn more about seals, and the procedures of recording counts, species, behavior and other relevant observations. It is especially important to conduct these surveys in order to understand how and where the animals are moving through their environment and the impacts we have on these animals. We will be meeting at Cupsogue Beach County Park in Westhampton Beach.

*Due to the further drive, parents are welcome to stay and follow behind our group for this event

This particular area along the path at Cupsogue is known as a seal haulout spot- there is a large sandbar that these animals seem to enjoy sunbathing on. There isn’t necessarily a guarantee to see seals in the wild, but we will certainly try and pick up marine debris along the way that could be adversely affecting the habitat of these animals.

Please keep in mind that the temperatures will be significantly lower on the beach so please dress accordingly and wear comfortable sneakers/waterproof boots for walking (i.e. rain boots).

What to Bring:

  • Extra layers- hat, gloves, thick socks
  • Backpack or bag to hold extra layers
  • Sunglasses/hat
  • Water bottle
  • Binoculars (I will have extra)
