Seal Walk at Crane Neck Beach

February 5, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Please note, this event is for registered for Nature Initiative members only. To learn more about our youth program, click here.

It is that time of year where we will be starting our seal walks again!

Each winter, seals are hauling out onto Long Island’s shores and rocky beaches as part of their migratory routes. For some species, our winters are their summers! Field biologists from the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) work to take survey data based on observations of these animals. They rely on volunteer efforts to gain more insight into patterns and trends. Come join us to learn more about seals, and the procedures of recording counts, species, behavior and other relevant observations.

Last year we spotted a handful of animals at this location. Although there isn’t necessarily a guarantee to see seals in the wild, we will certainly try and pick up marine debris along the way that could be adversely affecting the habitat of these animals.

We will be meeting at a local private beach in Old Field this time to do our seal survey and pick up marine debris. At the end of the season, we will compare and contrast our data between Cupsogue and Crane Neck Beach.

Please keep in mind that the temperatures will be significantly lower on the beach so please dress accordingly and wear comfortable sneakers/waterproof boots for walking (i.e. rain boots).

What to Bring:

  • Extra layers- hat, gloves, thick socks
  • Backpack or bag to hold extra layers
  • Sunglasses/hat
  • Water bottle
  • Binoculars (I will have extra)
