Screech Owl Boxes

February 15, 2020 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Please note, this event is for registered for Nature Initiative members only. To learn more about our youth program, click here.

The Eastern-Screech Owl is a smaller species of owl that we see in our area. On the trails here at Avalon we’ve heard a mysterious trill that can’t be ignored which is indicative of this owl. Given their small size and their agility through the woods at night, it is difficult to spot them and they are very well camouflaged against tree bark. These owls are cavity nesters, meaning they will use a hole in a tree that was previously carved out by a woodpecker, squirrel, or from fungus/rot.

Being that there are a limited supply of tree cavities they can find a home in, we will be building nest boxes in hope that breeding pairs will be able to use them. The North Shore Land Alliance (NSLA) will use these boxes on a few of their preserves in Cold Spring Harbor and Oyster Bay. Kristen, a part of the NSLA stewardship team, we be sharing more information with us about her conservation work.

So come join in on this two part construction project where we will be building for the birds!
