The Kindness Garden Planting Day

May 19, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Please note, this event is for registered for Nature Initiative members only. To learn more about our youth program, click here.

Since 2014, our volunteers have been graciously assisting the Stony Brook Rotary Club in maintaining their native plant garden along the walkway of Stony Brook Harbor. This year, the club was able to take on a new project called “The Kindness Garden”, a memorial garden in dedication to 6-year old Catherine Violet Hubbard whose life was taken during the Sandy Hook tragedy in 2012. Catherine always said one day she would care for all animals, as this was her passion. The Kindness Garden, started by her parents, will be a beautiful dedication in honor of this little girl. We will be using specific plants to attract various types of butterflies and pollinators.

Although there is a larger design in the plans, right now our goal is to get the plants in the soil. The Stony Brook Rotary Club received them much quicker than they thought! Enjoy a beautiful sunny afternoon planting with us along the walkway in remembrance of Catherine. We will be meeting on Sand Street in Stony Brook on the walkway along the harbor, located in the far parking lot to the right of the yacht club.
