If you’ve hiked the meadow trails at Avalon, you’ve probably noticed our Eastern bluebird nest boxes. Although we haven’t seen many pairs of bluebirds lay a clutch successfully, we’ve observed increased nesting activity over the last couple of years. As cavity nesters, bluebirds will inhabit a nest box or other artificial refuges. The main issue with their lack of success is…bullying! Yes, tree swallows and bluebirds will compete with each other for nesting sites. However, placing multiple bird boxes near one another can reduce pressure and interspecific competition.
Come join us to build another set of nest boxes that we can install in the field- if we have our boxes situated in pairs, we may be able to observe successful bluebird nesting/egg laying in the future! We will be meeting at the Avalon Barn located on Shep Jones Lane.
